The bad cartoonist

Surprise, surpise! I do have a heart

After some thought, I decided to give poor Jeff Koterba a break. He may draw like a drunken sloth but he did ask nicely so I decided to boost his traffic by linking to his site. The whopping two cartoons I posted earlier are now just thumbnails that link to his work on Cagle’s site. I know, I know, you’re life is ruined because you have to press that little clicky button instead of seeing his cornea-shattering work here, but at least Daryl will get some more hits on his ad-laden site and he’ll be able to feed his kids a teaspoon-full more of gruel a day.

Just think of the children.

No, I am not doing this because I think Jeff is right about fair use — although, I have to admit, I don’t mind getting sued when my paper foots the bill. As for this site, I’m still wondering if I made the right idea when I spent $10 for the domain. FYI, he’s not right and I love that he gets so worked up about it. I think I might google his name and see how many 13 year-old gun nuts have his work and their myspace pages. We could make a huge list and forward to Jeff so that he can spend his time tracking down all those nasty criminals misusing his work.

The real reason I’m doing it because I am a lazy too (it’s part of the job description) and I really don’t want to get into a pissing match when I guess I can see where he is coming from.

So, sucky cartooning has won this battle, but the war still wages on! Be vigilant, brave reader, victory will be ours!

Ok, I think it’s time we talk about something else now.

Curses, thwarted again! Jeff is smart enough to not have an archive of his cartoons that is easily accessible. The best we’ve got is a seven-day archive on Omaha.com. Even his own newspaper doesn’t want people to see his work. Are they hiding something? I’ve linked to files on cagle’s site for now, until I can come up with something better.

Most cartoonists I know actually want their work to be passed around. It stands to reason that the more people who see your work, the greater the impact. For some reason, Jeff doesn’t want people to see his work. He would rather hide it.

Huh.

Oh, and Jeff. This is legal too. If you don’t like it when someone posts a thumbnail of your cartoon that links to a place where it is hosted then you’d better call the lawyers. Google is ripping you off, BIG TIME!

Do you read what you post to see if it makes any sense from line to line? It’s like you’ve got three different, concurrent and sometimes contradictory conversations going on here.

You say what you’re doing is fair, but you take the stuff down. You say you’re sticking up for good work, but you’re backing down.

What’s the deal?

Comment by Philip Shade

It’s not just fair, but “fair use,” a legal permission to use someone’s copyrighted work. And while I wouldn’t back down, I see BC’s point: why waste time in a pointless, distracting argument?

Admittedly, without such arguments, the Internet would be just a collection of porn and items on ebay. But still….

Comment by Kevin Moore

Of course, if or when someone files a suit, there goes BC’s cloak of anonymity.

Comment by blandcartoonist

In fairness to Jeff, the lack of an archive is most likely the Omaha World Herald’s fault. As the paper has one of the worst websites in the country.
He’s still a hack, and I’m disappointed you’re caving.

I enjoy learning about the cartoonists’ craft from this site – the observations are interesting and thought-provoking even when I, or others, might disagree with the analysis. However, I think the use of emotionally charged language is unnecessary and unwarranted – It gets in the way of people reflecting upon the insightful and serious observations of your claims. Feel free to criticize a person’s work, but don’t attack them personally and don’t use such loaded terminology and everyone would benefit more – even those whom you evaluate. Otherwise, we have to work to look past your attacks to see if what you have to say has merit. And isn’t making the reader work hard to figure out the value of your post one of your objections about poor artistry? Cheers.

As a total outsider who is merely a fan of editorial cartoons, I found this site and the e-mail interview on DailyCartoonist.com to be immensely entertaining. I am not yet convinced that this isn’t all a grand publicity stunt for this art form, because I am enthralled. I have been clicking for more sites and learning a great deal about those involved. Why just reading the 100+ comments from the DailyCartoonist interview left me with some very useful tidbits:

A) If Wiley Miller is on fire at a Halloween party, please take off your mask before you tell him.
B) Although I usually laugh at his work, Jeff Darcy is a prick
C) Ted Rall, John Cole, Keven Moore, and Nick Anderson (and others from the thread) are undoubtedly hilarious regardless of the medium.
D) Editorial cartoonists do not seem to grasp the irony of complaining of anonymity while anonymous, nor complaining about ad homonym attacks in written form while ignoring it when it is drawn. Either that or they are excessively dry and their sarcasm doesn’t translate well into text. (which must be why they label things so damn much in their cartoons)

As member of the elusive young demographic, I again want to float the theory that this is brilliant viral campaign. Oh, and stop complaining about his anonymity. Without it, many would just now be coming down from their knee-jerk, kill-the-messenger, blind rage.

Thank you Bad Cartoonist and thank you Editorial Cartooning community.

That about sums it up, Ross.

When are you going to have a new post? Or do we have to cross-reference you not posting with a cartoonist who is on vacation to ultimately determine your identity?

Comment by Not Anon

Maybe he’s not posting because all of this week’s political cartoons have been just swell!

Comment by Kevin Moore

Three guesses.

Guess No. 1: BC is waiting to see who bags the Pulitzer.

Guess No. 2: BC is back on prescribed meds.

Guess No. 3: BC has tired of the chase.

Comment by Shmerlock Shmomes

I’m guessing BadCartoonist is Eliot Spitzer.

Comment by Marquil

Bad Cartoonist, I noticed in today’s paper there was a roundup of cartoons, and three of the five were about RX drugs in the water. I went online and found many, MANY more like them. You should do a post on that.

Just a humble suggestion to prod you back into posting :)

Comment by Not Anon

And don’t forget all the depictions of Spitzer with his pants down! Bwa ha ha!

Comment by Kevin Moore

…..his pants down with HEARTS on his boxers!

Comment by Jim Lavery

…his pants down with HEARTS on his boxers, reading the newspaper w/Silda on a desert island!

(I wish)

Comment by Lascauxcaveman

are you client #10?

Comment by Jim Lavery

…and so we sit and wait for BC’s return…

Comment by Dean

Hmm, this blog looked promising, but appearently BC quickly lost enthusiasm…

Comment by Jeppe 80

i need me some bad cartoons

Comment by BoredCArtoonisst

I wonder if that chill wind Tim Robbins warned us about has cooled BC’s feet. Who would have thought that the reprisals and threats would have come from his fellow cartoonists- most of whom claim to be open minded, thoughtful advocates of debate.

Comment by Furious Diaper

well….somebody could post a “bad” cartoon and re-light the proceedings………..

Comment by pooch

“bad cartoon”

BC pointed out Matson’s knack and abuse of tuning movie posters. 10,000 BC was his latest. I wonder if he’s even aware of the formula/pattern….. and his photo makes him look pretentious….that’s my attempt at a BC zing.

Comment by Furious Diaper

Go check cagle.com and see how many have drawn governor Spitzer in a knights armor. Is that some reference I don’t understand? (I am not American you know). Several cartoonists have gotten the idea of drawing Obama covering his head with cloth or paperback. Somebody here is being unoriginal I think…

Comment by Jeppe 80

Hmm…two weeks without an update.

Methinks the BC has been found out and hoist on his own petard.

Tis a pity.

Comment by Neil J

It’s not nice to call someone petarded.

Comment by Jim Lavery

Go check out the current New Yorker cover. Spitzer’s a knight on horseback with his pants off wearing shorts with hearts on them. It’s a nice painting, though.

Comment by arty

Aw…I’m sad. Was this too good to last? I was so psyched to discover this site.

Comment by whoo_whoo

So which brave cartoonist sent how many flying monkey lawyers to snatch BC?

Comment by Furious Diaper

Hell, he probably went to my site and promptly died from a coronary at all the badness.

Comment by cravensworld

Sigh…
I guess the harsh realty of Bad Cartoonist was too good to last.

Comment by BC fan

Who killed BC?

Comment by Captain Ironic

I, for one, am truly disheartened that whomever Badcartoonist was has taken a powder. It’s unfortunate that such a novel approach to critiquing the work of artists that should be thicker skinned than to take real offense at having the onion of their peeled back for a peek inside. Some of the things he pointed out were very apparent, others not…and perhaps some were even nit-picky, but I thought it was done with great humor. I don’t think whoever BC was thought that he was a perfect example himself, and I do believe he was a cartoonist, though one with a bit of time on his hands.

Anyway, I’m sad he’s closed up shop and moved on…and as they used to say on a favorite TV show of mine from the past…who was that masked man?

Comment by Dean

Don’t you guys get it. It is up to us to carry on. Find those bad cartoons. Put a link on this thread. Tell the world. Make them better. watch and listen as they get bitchy.

We must carry on!

Comment by Just a guy

I agree with a lot of the stuff you’re saying here. But I think you’re missing the point. You’re focusing too much on the lazy drawing style, and less on the lazy reading public. As an unpaid political cartoonist, I found that most of my readers are pretty smart, but this is only because I get the chance to also write supporting information with my cartoons. When a person just looks at the cartoon (I try to avoid labels, and overly used images) they often don’t get it. Newspaper editorial cartoonists, the one’s your most critical of, don’t get this benefit and have to get editor approval to get published. And so they have to do hack work. If readers were smarter, and brought a deeper understanding to contemporary events, then the cartoons could actually be more complex.
